PIVOT!

PROJECT OVERVIEW

We created Pivot!, a mobile career-readiness pop-up that bridges the gap between accessibility and opportunity. Our goal was to empower job seekers who often face barriers like confusing applications, costly resume services, and limited professional guidance.

Through a combination of a welcoming physical pop-up, a user-friendly mobile app, and an intuitive kiosk experience, we designed a solution that makes career support approachable, practical, and free for everyone.

The Problem

Landing a job shouldn’t depend on expensive tools or insider connections — yet for many people, it does.
Our research revealed that:

  • 1 in 3 Americans lacks access to affordable career counseling or job search help.

  • 61% of job seekers feel lost in the application process.

  • The average resume-writing service costs $150–$400, out of reach for most entry-level job seekers.

We recognized a need for career readiness resources that are free, approachable, and accessible — meeting people where they already are, like libraries, job fairs, and community centers

The Solution

We designed Pivot! as a hybrid experience combining digital and in-person support.

Pop-Up Events
Mobile career booths offering free resume help, interview prep, wardrobe guidance, and professional headshots.

App & Kiosk System
A connected experience where users can build resumes, schedule appointments, and access ongoing learning tools.

Friendly Branding
A bold yet approachable identity centered on empowerment and momentum, helping users feel confident rather than intimidated.

Who We Reached

Our survey reached participants across a diverse range of ages and professional backgrounds. Half of respondents were between 45–54 years old, followed by 36% aged 35–44 and 14% aged 18–24, showing that career transition needs span across generations.
In terms of profession, 50% worked in finance, with the rest divided among healthcare, education, tech, and office administration. We also spoke with students preparing to enter the workforce.
Together, this mix provided us with insights from both experienced professionals seeking stability and young adults looking to start their first careers.

What We Learned About Career Readiness

When asked about their most pressing career needs, respondents overwhelmingly requested help “knowing where to start” (16 responses), followed by finding jobs that match their skillset (12 responses). Resume writing and interview prep were also common themes, reinforcing the need for step-by-step, supportive guidance rather than one-off advice.

Additionally, half of participants had applied for a job within the past month, while nearly a third hadn’t done so in several months or longer. This mix showed that many job seekers are either just beginning their search or returning after a break, often unsure where to begin again.

These insights confirmed that Pivot! needed to focus on clear entry points, practical tools, and approachable design to help users regain confidence in their job search journey.

Wireframes

Our wireframes focused on making the job-seeking process feel simple, human, and stress-free. We mapped every touchpoint—from opening the app to scheduling an appointment—to ensure users could move confidently without confusion or intimidation.

We structured the experience around three key flows:

  • Resume Builder: A guided, step-by-step process that walks users through creating or uploading a resume, making it feel doable even for first-time job seekers.

  • Appointment Scheduler: A straightforward system to book services like resume reviews, interview prep, or headshots, with nearby pop-up locations and calendar integration.

  • Profile Onboarding: Personalized questions to help tailor the app’s guidance, meeting users wherever they are in their career journey.
